PRESS RELEASE BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT

31TH May, 2017

We had intentionally delayed this press release to allow us time to engage with relevant stakeholders before saying anything about the 3 students that were shot during a hijacked protest at Murtala Mohammed Highway on 27th May.

The SUG president strongly condemns this display of power drunkenness by security operatives who were dispatched to maintain order at the scene. He implores all Nigerian Students to remain calm as the situation is under
control. The victims are responding to treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital
(UCTH).
It is however unfortunate that among the protesting Nigerian Students, it was our own Students who suffered gunshots as a result of the sporadic shooting by security personnel.
Nonetheless, it baffled us to express the least that any sane being would allege that the Hon. Commissioner for Youths and Sports whose focal agenda is to defend and pursue the welfare and
interests of the Youths would order the security personnel to open fire at Students or Youths. To us, such conceived idea is below common logic
and amounts to an act of figment of self
imagination.
Be it as it may, the Hon. Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Asu Okang, and other relevant stakeholders have been properly briefed and were there to see things for themselves at the UCTH. After this visit, the Hon. Commissioner sympathized with the victims and
promised to hold a meeting with the SUG president in respect to the matter.
Once again, the president, Comr. Afufu Anthony enjoins all and sundry remain calm as the situation is already under control.

Chief Press Secretary to the SUG president
