UNIBADAN NON-ACEDEMIC UNIONS STRIKE

By Ola Ajayi IBADAN— Vanguard

Academic and social activities at the University of Ibadan have been grounded  following a strike declared by the three non-academic unions of the institution.

The unions directed their members to begin an indefinite strike to protest alleged deductions of pensions and shortfall in the payment of salaries by the management and federal government.

The strike was declared yesterday at a joint congress of the three unions where the position of the university management on meeting the demands was rejected. The unions had severally complained about the deductions which they said had made life unbearable for them.

To make the unions change their minds, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Idowu Olayinka had written to them stating his resolve to improve on staff welfare. But, the plea by the VC to grant the university some time to address all the issues while others will the channelled to the Governing Council scheduled to meet tomorrow was turned down by the aggrieved workers.

The congress was presided over by the leadership of non-academic staff union, Wale Akinremi, Senior Staff Association of Universities, Caleb Falaye (NAAT) and O.A Arojo (NASU).
